We won’t sugarcoat it: the drive south along the Boulder River is… memorable. Everyone makes the 50-mile journey from Big Timber—for some campers that *is* the trip, for others it’s the final stretch. Either way, it’s a shared rite of passage: bumpy, beautiful, and unmistakably Christikon.

A few friendly notes to help you plan the journey:

From Billings, plan on about three hours of driving—and a bit more if you stop along the way (which we recommend). Take I-90 West toward Big Timber and enjoy about 80 miles of smooth freeway as you close in on the Crazy Mountain Range. Exit at 370, follow Big Timber Loop (You’ll pass The Fort—a favorite stop for fueling vehicles and travelers alike), and turn left onto McLeod Street. You’ll roll through downtown Big Timber and continue as the road becomes Main Boulder Road, swinging south and west. Follow this scenic stretch for 29 miles. (*Approaches from the West, say, from Bozeman, take I-90 East and you have about 60 miles to Big Timber. Then, the rest is about the same. Exit 367 and into town and turn right onto McLeod street through downtown.)

On the Main Boulder Road, just before the pavement turns to gravel, you’ll spot the Natural Bridge Falls Picnic Area—a favorite stop for stretching legs, snapping photos, a last bathroom stop, or even enjoying lunch before the final drive to camp.

Once the road turns to gravel, you’re officially on the home stretch: 21 miles to Christikon. This section is slower and full of character. Expect narrow spots, dust clouds, one-lane bridges, and the occasional pause to let oncoming cars pass. You’ll also spot campgrounds, cabins, and other neighbors along the river.

When you reach Fourmile Creek, you’ll find a ranger station, trailhead, and pullout. There’s an outhouse if you need it, and it’s a great place to stretch your legs and get up close and personal with the Boulder River.

Take it slow and enjoy the views, knowing every bump brings you closer—we’ll be waiting at the end of the road.
